Classes

I am teaching Foundations in Tribal/Fusion Bellydance Monday and Thursday evenings, from 7:30pm–8:30pm, at Spirit Moves in downtown Charleston, SC.

Currently, classes are focused on developing a solid foundation in bellydance—and dance in general—so that dancers can go on to continue learning with good technique on their side.

Dance styles we will explore include American Tribal Style, Fusion (with Modern and Jazz dance), Vintage Orientale (otherwise known as American Cabaret) primarily in the Turkish style, and even some Middle Eastern and Eastern European folk dances!

At Spirit Moves, the first class you attend is free. So come on out and join me, and see what you think.

Schedule

Classes occur every Monday and Thursday evening, from 7:30pm–8:30pm.

Class Guidelines

In Foundations in Tribal/Fusion Bellydance, I hope that you’ll have a lot of fun, work hard, and enjoy learning about not only these types of bellydance, but dance in general. I’d like this class to be an open, exciting, fulfilling place for you to come and create, but I’d also like for you to learn and push yourself, to be the best dancer you can be. So please, come into class on time, prepared and ready to focus. And then we can have some fun!

There are a few things that I’d like you to keep in mind:

Clothing:

I’d prefer: tight or close-fitting tops, even if not midriff-bearing. This way I can more easily see your movements.

Please no: jewelry, coin scarves, or other accessories with dangly beads that can fall off or get annoying to sit on. Let’s save all the spangles for the haflas, shall we?

And please—wear a cover-up when coming to and from class, whether it be a t-shirt, a tank-top, or a hoodie. As long as it's something you'd wear out-and-about in town, you're good. Going to and from class (or, worse, a performance) in your dance bra is just unprofessional and tacky.

Bring to class with you:

Water: Please try to drink it before, during and after class.

A notepad: Sometimes, we’ll do exercises where you’ll need to write things down. And sometimes it may be easier to write down key features of a choreography we’re working on so you can go home and practice it, rather than try to remember it.

Which brings me to...

Homework:

If there is something I’d like you all to work on for next week, I’ll tell you by the end of class. I’ll also post the information here, at www.mydwynterstudios.com/homework.html

Also on that page, I’ll try to keep track of what we’ve been focusing on in class, as well as what I plan to focus on in future. I’ll also post links to things of interest, embed videos I’d like you call your attention to, and generally keep you guys informed as to what I’ve been thinking about in the world of bellydance.

Last but not least:

I say this in class a lot, but it bears repeating:

Talk to me. Let me know what you’re needing, if you need another example, if you need more floorwork or more instruction. I’m here to help you get what you need and want out of the class. But you have to talk to me.

Can’t wait to see you in class!
